The scale of the problem has been getting larger too over the last five years with high growth in diesel vehicle sales. In a modern diesel car or van it's pretty easy to forget you're driving one, especially if it's your second family car or most often a hire car.
If you have made the mistake of putting the wrong fuel in your vehicle, don't turn on the ignition or start the engine. This will circulate the contaminated fuel and definatly increase the risk of damage.
Potential Damage
Diesel fuel pumps operate on a fine tolerance and are lubricated by the diesel fuel itself.
Petrol in diesel acts as a solvent - so it reduces lubrication and can cause damage to the pump through metal on metal contact.
The new common rail (or HDi) diesel engines are the ones most vulnerable. If fuel contaminated by pump wear debris enters as far as the common rail system you may need to replace both the low and high pressure fuel pumps, injectors, fuel rail, line filters also the fuel tank.
